Help Shape the Future of Socially Responsible Licensing – EC Survey Is Now Open
The European Commission is conducting a survey to gather insights on Socially Responsible Licensing (SRL) practices in Knowledge and Technology Transfer Offices across Europe. This initiative follows discussions at the Driving EU Prosperity through Knowledge Valorisation conference in December 2024 and aims to better understand how licensing strategies can align with societal needs.
Why is this important?
Socially Responsible Licensing plays a key role in ensuring that research and innovation outcomes contribute to broader societal impact. Aligned with the Guiding Principles for Knowledge Valorisation and the Code of Practice on the management of intellectual assets, this survey will help shape future best practices and policies in the EU’s knowledge valorisation ecosystem. While SRL and Impact Licensing share common objectives, they approach the licensing process from different angles. SRL is often driven by technology owners, such as universities, to encourage societal and ecological valorisation of their research. In contrast, Impact Licensing takes a broader approach, balancing the interests of both technology owners and licensees to optimize societal value and ensure sustainable business models. The two frameworks complement each other, with SRL principles often incorporated into impact licensing agreements.
The survey is open until 7 February and takes only 10 minutes to complete. If you are involved in technology transfer, innovation management, or intellectual property strategy, we encourage you to share your experience.
