IMPACT LICENSING TOOLKIT

Impact Licensing is a strategic tool for harnessing technology development through the negotiation of impact licences for key enabling technologies in order to create social, environmental and economic benefits in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).

Impact Licensing is grounded in guiding principles ensuring its societal value creation:

Additionality
Additionality: The creation of societal values comes in addition to existing markets and ensures that the intended impact does not compromise the existing profitability of the technology
Intentionality
Intentionality: The licence is granted solely for the purpose of achieving a specific social, environmental, or economic benefit
Measurability
Measurability: To ensure accountability and credibility, the societal impact of Impact Licensing Agreements is measurable through Independent third-party assessments

FROM IDEA TO ACTION IN SIX INSTRUMENTS

Through joint collaboration and intensive feedback from partners and stakeholders, the Impact Licensing Initiative developed a practical toolkit to guide users through the entire process of assessing a technology for the purpose of creating long-term societal value in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). The toolkit is comprised of six different instruments spanning the entire project cycle from technology assessment to the creation of legally robust impact licences, the acquisition of an impact licence quality label, an impact financing tool, engagement with clearing houses, the setup of an Impact Investment Fund, and the formation of IP pools to support emergency disaster relief efforts.
